Updating Our Dining Room Art: Roundup of Floral Botanical Prints

I’ve been on the hunt for floral botanical prints for a while now. I added them to my thrift wish list and have been looking for just the right ones to create a series to use in our home. Today on the blog, I’m sharing the floral botanical prints I’ve scooped up, the ones I’ve saved to my favorites, and where I plan on using them.

Recently, we had the siding, windows, and gutters replaced on our home. In preparation for the work to be done, I removed a lot of the artwork and mirrors we had on our walls. This was mostly to prevent anything from falling off due to all of the construction and hammering going on.

But, I’m also ready for a bit of change. This seems like the perfect time to rethink the art we have on our walls and how it’s displayed now that everything is down.

Right now I’m focusing on our dining room. We have a very large blank wall that previously held a mix of art and prints. It was a large display that was more casual in design. Spacing wasn’t perfect, frames were not identical, and the theme included everything from florals and portraits to landscapes and nautical. It was a mix of anything and everything that we have in our home that I love and thought could work together.

This time around, I want a gallery wall with a little more structure. Something more uniform in theme and design. I love florals and have quite a few floral prints in my collection. My idea is to create a series featuring floral botanical prints and create a large display on our blank wall.

Recent Antique Store Finds

While shopping at a local antique mall I fell in love with some unframed floral botanical prints. The booth had a handful to comb through and there were 4 that stood out to me. Ultimately I selected 2 of them and now I’m considering going back for the other 2. I love the colors in them and that they are larger in size. I’m using these as my starting point and inspiration and will be building my gallery out from here.

I also have 3 smaller floral botanical prints that I found at a local vintage shop I love. I would love to use these smaller prints with the larger ones I found above if it makes sense. Just need to figure out what size frames and matting to use for each size that works together.

The Display

Getting the Layout Right

Our dining room wall is about 155″ in length and about 57″ from chair rail to crown. I would like to create a display that fills most of the space on this wall to create a statement piece. If the other 2 floral botanical prints I left behind at the antique mall are still there, I would love to frame all 4 and use them as the center of my gallery.

From there, I’m thinking about adding smaller framed coordinating floral botanical prints to help fill the wall and create interest.

Layout Option #1

The first layout I’m considering is pretty straightforward. It’s just framing the prints in 16″x20″ frames and placing them in a grid centered on the wall. The spacing is just an estimate right now but I’m thinking between 1-2 inches.

In this example, I only used 8 but I may be able to get one more set on each end for a total of 12. A series with 8 feels pretty good and maybe 12 would be too much? I’ll have to test it out and see.

For frames, I would keep them all the same. I’m thinking of simple gold frames or maybe a medium wood tone. The size of the mats though would vary depending on the size of the print. I would probably need to increase it on the smaller prints. I’m not sure if I like this or not and need to think about it a bit more.

Layout Option #2

I’m not sure if the first option just feels too predictable or if I’m bored by it. For some reason, I feel like I need to rethink the simple classic grid and make it what….more exciting? Idk.

I’ve been trying to think of ways to shake it up a bit. Is there a way for me to keep the display looking traditional and classic at first glance but add an unexpected element by changing up the sizes of the frames? I still want the symmetry but maybe I can achieve that a little more creatively? I haven’t landed on a decision yet and need to overthink it a bit more.

Selecting the Frames

As far as frames go, as I mentioned above, I’m thinking of simple gold frames or a medium wood tone if I can find something I like. Both would look pretty and would add warmth to the space which is something it needs.

I found some budget-friendly options on Amazon. This set of 3 simple gold 16″x20″ frames comes with mats but I would probably source something different. This set of 4 wood-toned frames could be pretty but I would need to order it to see it in person to make my final decision.

I’ve also looked at Etsy and have thought about using FrameBridge or going to my local Hobby Lobby. All of these would be much more expensive though. I did a quick mockup on FrameBridge just to get an idea of options available and what pricing would be. One framed botanical would run about $185. This is for their Florence gold frame with a silk green mat and marigold trim. Pretty but not exactly what I’m looking to spend.

Sourcing Additional Floral Botanical Prints

Etsy Finds

While I’ve had some luck finding floral botanical prints at antique stores and will continue to look for them, I thought I would change it up and check out Etsy. I’ve found quite a few I love and think could work with the prints I already have. Here are the ones I have saved to my favorites:

• This yellow buttercup art print is so pretty and you can get it in multiple sizes. I also love the blue aster flower art print from the same shop.
• If I was only looking for two prints for a smaller wall I would go with these gilded bamboo-like framed beauties with conservation glass. A little more expensive than the ones I’ve been looking at but they are already beautifully framed and ready to hang.
• There are so many in this next shop that I saved to my wish list. This antique blue iris art print is gorgeous. The seller states that their prints retain the vintage charm and character of the original making them feel older than they are. The soft yellow and lavender in their vintage tulips print is also gorgeous. Even though I’m looking for florals, I think their antique thyme art print could also work. And, this set of 2 antique botanical prints has a delicateness to them that I love. They would be good to mix in with all the floral images to add interest.
• This set of 8 floral botanical prints is a little different than what I’ve been gravitating towards but I love that the background is unique. The text behind the image is actually a page out of a vintage dictionary that they print over. The text doesn’t take away from the floral on display but rather enhances it. Adding to the vintage look and feel of the piece. They come in two sizes: 5″x7″ and 8″x10″ and also have a set of three herbal botanical art prints.

And, because my phone knows I’m searching for floral botanical prints, Amazon started serving up some of their options as well. All three options are under $15 each for the set and are a great budget friendly way to get the look for less.

Closing

I still have some reasearch to do and some decisions to make but I feel like I’ve got a good start. I’ll share more once I narrow down the prints I’m using and have found the frames and mats that will work.

I’m excited to get this figured out. I feels so weird to ahve a big blank wall in our dining room and I’m itching to fill it and bring in some more color. Do you have a large gallery wall in your home you love?
