Prepping the House for Spring
Decorating our home for spring happens gradually and organically as the weather continues to improve. There’s more of a focus on organizing and decluttering first than adding more to our decor.
At Christmas time our whole house is transformed and every room is decked for the holidays. I love how festive and inviting it makes our home. It sets the tone for the season and is the perfect backdrop for celebrating with family and friends. Even though I’m always sad to pack Christmas away, by the time we get into the new year, I’m craving a fresh clean slate.
The warmer days bring a desire to throw open the widows and give the house a good scrubbing. A few years ago I created a 30 Day Spring Organization Challenge for myself and shared it here on the blog. As a lover of checklists, It’s one I go back to each year as my guide for navigating this new season.
As unruly piles of “stuff” get put away and rooms come to order, our home decor begins to shift and change to match the new season and the way we use and live in our home during the warmer months.
Spring Time in Our Home
I wrote a blog post a couple of years ago on subtle ways to add touches of spring to your home. In that post I share little changes I like to make that support how we want our home to feel during this time of year.
As spring approaches and the weather warms I crave light and airiness in our spaces and in our decor. I work my way through our home organizing and returning items to their proper home or finding one for them. As spaces are cleared and order returns, I can feel my brain relax and clear as well.

Our Dining Room
I always seem to start in our dining room when updating our decor for spring. It’s incredibly satisfying and motivating to get our dining room table, the #1 drop zone in our house, cleared off. The room immediately feels refreshed with the clutter gone and everything put way.
This is especially important to me since I’ve been using our dining room table as my office for the past 6 years. I love all the space I have to spread out but it can get a bit overwhelming and distracting with all the clutter around. I try to keep the items on our table to a minimum when I can.
A pretty small cut glass vase to hold pens and lip gloss. I thrifted mine but Etsy was some great options like this crystal bud vase or this Waterford hand cut crystal vase.
My favorite green tea scented candle, and a fresh bouquet of flowers to bring life to the space are also must haves.
I tend to treat myself to fresh flowers a bit more in the spring and summer months. I love the color and beautiful soft fragrance they add to a room.
Sometimes I’ll splurge on a gorgeous custom bouquet from my favorite local florist. Other times I’ll grab an inexpensive mixed bouquet from the grocery store. My goal is to grow more cut flowers in our garden just for this purpose. I love creating arrangements to display in various rooms in our home. It’s one of life’s small pleasure that brings me so much joy.

In the spring, I also like to add subtle nods to upcoming holidays. Easter is one of them. The way I approach this though is to take items that don’t feel overly specific to one single holiday but rather speak to the season we are in. An example of this is my small collection of marble eggs that I like to display in a bowl on the chest in our dining room.
The marble eggs I thrifted are a nod to traditional Easter eggs that are created to celebrate the holiday but also speak to the new life we see this time of year. Their design is classic and traditional in style and presentation making them work for both the holiday but also as everyday seasonal decor.
The last thing I want after decking the holidays for Halloween and Christmas, and clearing and organizing our home, is to add a bunch of holiday specific decor along side our everyday items for a limited amount of time. This is why I gravitate towards items that can pull double duty and work for both.

Family Room
This is my first year decorating our built-ins for spring. And although this room is still very much a work progress, making small changes to the items on display helps it feel pulled together. Even if isn’t.
We painted this room Secret Garden by Sherwin Williams. It’s a deep lush green that makes this smaller room the perfect cozy spot to hunker down in on a cold winters night. To brighten up the shelves a bit for spring I swapped out the art and flipped some of the books around to expose the white pages instead of the spines. I’ve never displayed books like this before and thought it would be something different and a way to bring lightness to the dark shelves.

I also added texture and interest through the use of a scalloped wicker tray. Wicker to me in general just screams spring/summer. It can be made of natural fibers, bringing the outdoors in, and visually comes across as light and airy. It can feel refined but also casual. Making this tray the perfect way to corral our bar cart items so we’re ready when the warm summer nights hit.

Ever heard of The Unexpected Red Theory? This white wicker scalloped tray with red trim would be a great way to test out the theory in your own home. I think I need this one as well!
Another way I added texture and brought the outdoors in is with the displays I created inside our glass cloches. At Christmas time they held a mix of vintage ornaments. For spring, I added dried flowers and other foliage to display on our shelves. Again, bringing the outdoors in to add life to our spaces.

The last thing I did in here was add a small mirror to one of the shelves and place my cordless table lamp in front of it. Mirrors are another great way to expand small spaces. They bounce the light around the room and help add the perception of depth and openness. Tricking the eye into thinking there is more space than there is.

Guest Bathroom
I recently posted a long overdue post sharing the reveal of our guest bathroom. This was a space we completed in the spring/summer of 2021 and I LOVE how it turned out.
It’s a tiny space but even in here I make a couple small updates to signaI the changing of the seasons. I like to swap out our paper guest towels for a pretty spring floral or Toile print. It’s a really inexpensive way to inject a little extra personality and align with the new season.
This year I also found a really pretty soap dispenser at HomeGoods. I love the dark green ruffled edge and the chinoiserie like pattern around the base. Very spring like and another inexpensive way to freshen up the space.
This ceramic foaming hand soap dispenser would elevate any bathroom and add spring vibes to the space. This light pink Chinoiserie inspired soap dispenser is also beautiful and comes in other colors.
The Famille Rose ceramic soap dispenser has a small scalloped detail that is just so pretty.

Guest Bedroom
Our guest bedroom also got a recent feature on the blog. It’s currently being refreshed and I shared the design updates we’ve made so far in our guest bedroom and what we still have left to do. This room gets the most gorgeous western sunlight in the afternoon/early evening. It’s easily one of my favorite rooms to hang out or read in on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Previously the room was painted Melon Pink by Behr. The room was pretty happy and light to begin with but I wanted to update it to match our current style and taste. I painted the walls Creamy and the trim and board and batten Colonial Revival Green Stone by Sherwin Williams. The yellow undertones in Creamy and the muted sage green of Colonial Revival Green Stone work really well in this sunlit room. Making it feel like a warm hug.
To usher spring into our guest bedroom, and into our own, I did a couple of things. I swapped the bedding and added in lighter layers for those warmer nights. Cotton sheets to keep our guests cool and layers of blankets so they can decide the level of warmth that works for them. I have a few cotton sheet sets from Target and they have held up really well and are affordable.

Instead of fresh flowers in our guest bedroom I pulled out some faux stems I had and added them to a clear glass vase. I used a mix of eucalyptus and olive stem branches to add some texture and interest. They’re less maintenance but still create the sense of bringing the outdoors in. Grounding the room and helping our guests to feel welcomed and relaxed.
