I can’t believe September is already here and summer is coming to an end. Here in Ohio, A few cooler days have managed to sneak their way in this month, getting me excited for the upcoming season! It’s got me thinking about fall and changing up my home decor to create a moody seasonal look.
I tend to gravitate towards the darker colors of the fall season. The moody greens, burgundies, and black, rather than the traditional oranges and yellows. I tend to prefer these colors in our home rather than the latter.
But, these colors can feel a bit cool and while that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, I think this year we’re all craving things that are cozy, warm, and inviting.
Today, I’m sharing my favorite fall home decor I use to create that moody vibe and ways to keep the look cozy and inviting in your space.

Moody fall home decor + how to keep it cozy and inviting
Embrace the moodier colors of the fall season
First things first. In order to create a moody fall look in your home, you gotta embrace the darker colors of the season.
Deep, dark green, rich burgundy, plum, and black of course. These colors will help set the tone and create the base for your moody fall look.
When picking out fall decor for our home this is the color pallet I lean into. Below are some of the seasonal items that are great to add to your home for that moody fall vibe.
- Burgundy and cranberry-colored mums
- Dark and light green/blue pumpkins
- Black and dark green gourds – the lumpier the better
- Leafy green plants like ornamental kale and cabbage
Mums
Mums are the quintessential fall plant and are perfect for bringing those fall vibes to your porch and into your home. There are so many beautiful colors to choose from but to get a moody fall look with your home decor, stick with the deeper shades of burgundy and fuchsia.
Create a tonal look on your front porch for fall by picking one color and varying the shades for an elevated and sophisticated look. Mix in other fall foliage of the same tone to bring in texture and interest like in this Pin from Pinterest.
Pumpkins and gourds
No fall home decor is complete without a few pumpkins in the mix! To create a moody fall vibe, stick with the darker green and blue varieties.
One of my favorite items to use in my home during the fall season is gourds. They bring so much texture and interest to a space. The weirder the shape and the lumpier they are the better!
Ornamental kale and cabbage
Another one of my favorite seasonal items to mix in with my fall decor is dark leafy green plants like kale and cabbage.
The colors are perfect for creating that moody fall vibe and the texture they bring into your home helps add interest and depth to your decor.

How to keep the look cozy and inviting
Keep it warm with touches of brass, wood, and earth-tones
To keep the look from being too cool, add in touches of brass, wood, and earth-toned accessories. These elements all have warm tones to them which will bring that warmth into your space.
Think aged brass with great patina and wooden objects such as vases and bowls. These items are perfect for mixing in with your seasonal fall decor. Bringing in warmth and adding layers to your look.
Earth tones are trending right now and are another great way to ensure your moody fall look doesn’t go too cool. Accessories in colors with yellow undertones will bring the most warmth to your decor. Creamy white, muddy brown, mossy green and amber all have warm undertones and will perfectly complement the other moody seasonal colors.

I did some shopping around and these are some of my recent home decor finds that fit the bill and are perfect for adding warmth into your home.
- Brass Booker Pillar Candle Holders
- Brass Booker Taper Candle Holders
- Natural Wood Bowls and Vases
- Leather Pillow Covers
- Tortoise Glass Candles

Add in texture to amp up the cozy vibe
Fall is all about cozy, warm, and inviting spaces and another way to bring these feelings into your home is with texture.
Seasonal fall decor items such as lumpy gourds and ornamental kale and cabbage all have great texture already. But, to bring in the cozy and warmth we’re all craving during this season, add baskets, textiles, and other accessories full of texture.
An inexpensive way to bring texture into your home is with items from nature. Branches, feathers, and moss are just a few ideas that come to mind. Real, no longer in use, wasps nests have also become quite popular as a curiosity to add to fall and Halloween decor.
If wasps nests aren’t your thing, what about mushrooms? I recently found some dried tree mushrooms while out thrifting and scooped them up for fall decor. I found a large cloche earlier this summer and have been trying to find something unique to display inside. These mushrooms were the perfect find for fall and I love the texture and interest they bring to my display.

Hands down my favorite accessories to use in our home are old books and fresh flowers, and fall is no different. Not only do old books have loads of character but when used in mass bring lots of warmth. Turn the books so the pages face out to add texture to your display.
Fresh flowers and plants breathe life into your spaces. For fall, I like to transition to moodier, seasonal colors for my arrangements. Extending the joys of summer just a bit longer in my home. Also, mums and other fall plants are not just for your porch! Use them inside as well to bring texture into your home.
fall candles create an inviting atmosphere
Fall candles are another great way to warm up cooler fall home decor displays. The ambient glow from the flame brings physical warmth while the seasonal scents warm your heart.
Nothing brings the cozy vibes quite like a scented candle. During fall, I lean into the sweet, seasonal scents for our home like caramel apple, pumpkin pie, and toasted marshmallow. Even a simple vanilla candle makes a home feel instantly cozy and inviting. Despite what the temp may be outside!
moody fall home decor that’s also warm and inviting
Creating a moody fall look in your home doesn’t have to be cold and uninviting. Mixing in accessories that add warmth and texture, and using the sense of smell to invoke cozy vibes, are all great ways to keep the look warm and inviting.
What are some of the ways you add warmth to your home to make it feel cozy and inviting?
