How to pick the right wallpaper for your home
Wallpaper has been making a major comeback these past few years. It’s been seen popping up more and more on DIY and home decor shows and in design magazines.
I’ve always been a fan of wallpaper but honestly, I haven’t had a chance to use it in our home yet. I recently decided to give one of our guest bedrooms a makeover and thought this was the perfect opportunity to add some to our home.

I’ve been searching on Pinterest for inspiration and I think I may have found the perfect wallpaper for our guest bedroom.
This week, I shared our guest bedroom mood board design and the wallpaper I selected for the space. You can read the post here on the blog.
There are a ton of options out there and lots to consider when picking out wallpaper. It can be overwhelming for sure. If you’re in the same boat as I was keep reading for tips on how to pick the right wallpaper for your home.
Selecting wallpaper for your home
01: How do you want the space to feel
When kicking off any new design project, start by defining the purpose of the room and figuring out how you want the space to feel.
Do you want a cozy and inviting space? Or, maybe you want a room that is vibrant and energizing to be in? Determining the vibe and mood for the room will help you to hone in on the colors and patterns that will best help you execute your vision.
02: What do you want the wallpaper to do for the room
While you’re figuring out how you want the space to feel, think about what you want the wallpaper to do for the space.
What do I mean by this? Well, here are some questions to ask yourself.
- Are you looking to add a big dose of color or pattern to your space?
- How about texture or interest?
- Do you want to create a feature wall or focal point in the room?
- Are you looking to disguise or highlight an architectural feature in the room?
Thinking through how you want to use wallpaper in your room will help you narrow down colors, patterns, and designs.
The bedroom I’m working on is on the smaller side making it feel inherently cozy. When the sun is out, it gets beautiful afternoon light despite only having one window. I had already determined that I wanted to play up the cozy factor and create a space that was warm and inviting.
Once I had determined the vibe and decided to use wallpaper to add overall pattern and interest in the room, I was able to further narrow down my selection to get to the right one.
03: Get a Swatch if you can
Just as you would get paint swatches when selecting a color to paint your walls, make sure to get samples of the wallpapers you’re interested in to test out in your space.
If you’re shopping online colors don’t always read true and can be distorted. I’ve run into this multiple times. I find something online that I think will be perfect only to get it in the space and see the color isn’t exactly what I expected.
Order swatches not only so you can see the colors in person but also so you can see how they look in the room. You may like a particular colorway or pattern online but hate it when you see it in person or in the space.
04: Calculate how much you need and buy all at once
While it can be tempting to just guess how much wallpaper you’ll need for your space, it’s best to buy all of it at the same time.
There are a couple of reasons why this is a good idea. For one, the wallpaper you selected could run out of stock or be discontinued in the process. Leaving you stuck with an incomplete space.
Another reason why it’s best to buy all the wallpaper you’ll need for your project is to ensure colors are consistent between rolls. If you have to order additional rolls most likely they will come from a separate batch and the colors can vary ever so slightly. Leaving you with a potentially noticeable difference between the two.
05: Search out examples of your favorites
Another tip for picking the right wallpaper for your home is to look for examples online. Between Google and Pinterest, you should be able to find images of the wallpaper your considering, in use.
Being able to see how a particular pattern or colorway looks in another room can help you to get a better idea of how it will look in your own space. Helping you to determine if the wallpaper you selected is the right one for your home.
I can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to find a ton of images or even one at all but the odds are you’ll find something. Especially if it’s a popular print.
06: Utilize tools that help you to visualize the end result
If you’re having trouble finding images on the web, there may be other tools you can use to help you visualize them in your space.
A Street Prints is one example. They have a tool that allows you to upload your own photos, or you can use one from their gallery and preview one of their wallpapers in your room. Simply select a wallpaper you want to view from one of their collections, upload your own interior room photo, and click to apply the wallpaper in the space.

It’s super addicting and super helpful for getting a better idea of what will and won’t work in your space. It doesn’t always apply the wallpaper perfectly to your image but it’s usually enough to get a pretty good idea.
