MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEAS PERFECT FOR STAYING HOME

I recently traveled down south to stay with my mom when she had surgery. While there helping with her recovery, I had some downtime while she rested. I decided I wanted to tackle some larger projects she couldn’t do herself so she wouldn’t have to hire out.

My sister and I decided to work on one of the guest bedrooms. We gave it a fresh coat of paint in a new color. After we completed the bedroom I decided I had time to paint one more small room before I had to leave. The main guest bathroom fit the brief. With a fresh coat of creamy white paint and some new accessories, the space feels brand new.

I always ask my mom around the holidays and at her birthday, if there’s anything special she’d like. Sometimes she’ll give me a couple of ideas but sometimes it seems like there’s nothing she really wants or needs. With Mother’s Day and her birthday coming up next month, these mini projects felt like the perfect gift to show her I love her.

While there, I also decided to take a look around for some more ideas. I took note of things that could use an update or needed to be replaced. Things she uses day to day that she would say are fine and wouldn’t put money towards updating/upgrading. I made a list of ideas for future gifts and I’m sharing them here with you in case you’re in the same boat.

1. Plush New Spa Like Bath Towels

One of the items that went on my list is new towels. But not just any towels. I wanted to find some that felt plush and luxurious. A towel that felt like an indulgence but didn’t carry a crazy price tag in case she wanted to add to them later on.

Since I was giving the guest bathroom a refresh, I thought this was the perfect time to update some of the accessories. Including the towels.

While out shopping, my sister and I found some new bathmats at HomeGoods and when we stopped at Target to grab a few things, I decided to take a look at their towel selection.

I found exactly what I was looking for and they even had a colorway that matched the new bathmats. I decided to purchase 4 of their Threshold Oversized Spa Plush Bath Towels in the colorway Sage Green as an early Mother’s Day gift. I also grabbed 4 Hand Towels in the same colorway.

If you don’t want or need something quite as big, they have a regular-sized bath towel and all come in a variety of colors.

Once I got them back to the house, and shared them with my mom, I got them washed and loaded in the linen closet for her. Before I left, I tried them out and I can attest that they are SO SOFT and cozy. I loved the generous size and I’m thinking about adding a few to our collection as well.

2. High-Quality Heirloom Cookware

Another great Mother’s Day gift idea for the mom in your life who shies away from spending money on upgrading everyday items is good cookware.

Mike and I have been looking for new pots and pans for a while now and couldn’t seem to make our minds up. We wanted something that was good quality and didn’t have all the chemicals that came with non-stick coatings.

I’ve been seeing lots of influencers sharing their love for the Our Place cookware. All the hype made me a little skeptical. I didn’t want to jump on the bandwagon just because everyone else seemed to.

During their Black Friday sale last year, I saw their Titanium Always Pan® Pro was on sale and decided to give it a go. And what do you know? It’s become our favorite pan to use. It has a nice weight to it and its no-coating nonstick technology is pretty impressive.

If you follow their suggestions for cooking and cleaning to preserve the nonstick technology it cooks and cleans up really well. We love it so much that we decided to add a few more pieces to our collection.

The Today Show had the Gold/Chrome Titanium Always Pan® Pro on sale earlier this year so I decided to order this one as well.

Last month I branched and ordered the Cookware Duo in Blue Salt which includes the Always Pan and the Perfect Pot in Ceramic. Their ceramic pieces are much lighter in weight and kinda took us by surprise.

I wasn’t sure I would like them as much but they have lived up to the hype and are a dream to cook with. While visiting my mom, I noticed her pots and pans could use an update and I think these would be a great option for her.

3. A Great Knife Set

Another item I added to my list while visiting my mom is a good knife set. This one is a bit pricey but would be a good option if you wanted to cover multiple holidays at once.

We purchased the Schmidt Brothers Zebra Wood 7-Piece Knife Set about a year ago for ourselves. It comes with 6 knives and I love that this set includes a serrated bread knife.

The knives are really sharp (ask me how I know) and they’ve all held up really well. We decided not to use the acrylic magnetic knife block it comes with. Instead, we purchased a drawer insert so we could save space on our counter.

4. Fluffy Duvet

My mom LOVES to stay in our guest bedroom and it’s because I’ve made that bed so damn cozy. A while back I wrote a post on my 10 Must Have Items for Guest Bedrooms and great layered bedding is at the top of the list.

Duvets have been a staple of mine forever and we have them on all of our beds. They make your bed look so comfortable and invite you to get in and snuggle up.

Last year I decided to upgrade the duvets in our home. I purchased this white all-season oversized king feather and down-filled duvet for our primary bedroom. I love the generous size and the weight. I don’t personally find it too heavy and it’s been perfect for all seasons.

5. Good Quality Sheets

In my opinion, sheets can make or break a bed. They are the layer that touches your skin and you want that layer to be as soft and natural as possible.

We have several sets of sheets from Target and the common thread (see what I did there) is they are all 100% cotton with high threadcounts. They’re soft against our skin while keeping us cool while we sleep.

We own 2 sets of these 100% Cotton 800 Threadcount Hotel Collection Sheets and we use them on both our bed as well as the guest bed. The sets I picked up years ago have a thin navy or taupe border but you can’t go wrong with just a plain white solid.

For a dose of pattern and to rotate in on laundry days, I reach for these Printed Performance 400 Thread Count Sheet Set in the pattern Arneda for our bed and the same in a blue and white dot for our guest bedroom.

6. Comfy and Cooling Mattress Topper

To go along with our theme of creating a cozy and comfortable bed, I give you the most amazing mattress topper.

3" Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper

While visiting my grandma in Florida I stayed in the guest bedroom on THE most comfortable bed. I couldn’t stop thinking about it when I got home so I asked her what type of mattress it was. She told me it was a 3″ memory foam mattress topper from Amazon that she put on both of the beds.

I have a 2″ mattress topper on my side of the bed that I thought was pretty great but this was a whole other level. It was so soft and squishy but supportive at the same time. I didn’t wake up with an achy back or sore hips from sleeping on my sides.

The memory foam is also infused with cooling gel to help you stay comfortable while you sleep. And in Florida, anything you can do to stay cool is a plus. I’ll be adding these to our beds!

7. Everyday Elevated Wardrobe Staples

My mom works part-time for her local church and while she goes into the office most days, she does work from home quite often.

She’s a social butterfly and loves to have breakfast or lunch dates out with friends. But like me, she’s also a homebody and loves it when she gets a day at home all to herself with nothing to do.

A couple of years ago while shopping at Evereve, I found the softest and most perfect sweatshirt. It was their popular Charter style in Ivory Marl. I hesitated when I saw the price but Mike told me to get it and so began my love affair with Varley clothing.

I now own the Charter in Olive Night and their most recent version, the Gabriella Sweat, in Coffee Bean. Mike also purchased the Keller Half-Zip Pullover in Black for my birthday. They are some of my most worn items in my closet.

I know this was a bit unconventional and strayed from the typical things we usually see advertised for Mother’s Day.
