As we head into fall, I’m turning my attention back to our guest bedroom, starting with a few new fall bedroom pillows to bring in a little more color, pattern and warmth. I’ve spent a lot of time lately working on our family room, and while there are still a few things I’m sourcing for that space, I’m ready to make a little more progress in here.

Since my last guest bedroom update, the room is functional, but it isn’t finished. And with the holidays just around the corner, I’d love to bring in more personality and continue adding some of the character the room is still missing before it starts getting more use again.
Fall also happens to be a really good time for me to experiment in this room. Because it isn’t used every day, it’s an easy place for me to play around, have a bit of fun, and experiment with my styling.
And the palette I’ve always imagined for this room naturally lends itself to fall. Muted earthy greens, shades of mustard and ocher, warm browns and touches of blue all feel seasonal right now, but they’re also colors I want to live in this room year-round. So rather than decorating the bedroom for fall, I’m using the season as an opportunity to move it a little closer to where I ultimately want it to go.
There are still some bigger decisions to make in here, but I don’t need to have all of those figured out before I start playing around with the room. For now, I’m starting small and using pillows to experiment with some of the colors and patterns I’ve been imagining for the space.
Adding Color and Pattern with Fall Bedroom Pillows
I had a pretty specific idea of what I wanted for the bed: two larger pillows at the back with a longer lumbar layered in front. As I started looking for fall bedroom pillows, I wanted the combination to feel classic and collected, but still fresh.
I started looking for ticking stripes and ginghams that could act almost like a neutral, then mixed those with faded florals and block prints. It’s that combination of familiar traditional patterns with something a little less expected that gives a bed the layered look I’m always drawn to.
While I was sourcing, I ended up finding a surprisingly good selection on Amazon. Since I’m still experimenting with the room, I didn’t want to invest heavily in pillows before I knew which colors and patterns I liked together in the actual space. These gave me a chance to play around with several combinations at a much more approachable price point.

FALL BEDROOM PILLOWS: THE COMBINATIONS I PUT TOGETHER

Brown Ticking Stripe + Creamy Open Floral
The first combination I pulled together pairs a brown ruffled-edge ticking stripe with the airy floral in front. Ticking stripes are such a classic pattern that it almost acts as a neutral here, creating a simple backdrop that could work with all kinds of pillows throughout the year.
The creamy floral kept catching my eye while I was searching, and once I added the two to my mood board, the combination just felt right. The small-scale pattern adds interest without competing with the stripe, and the muted brown and rust tones give it some of the warmth I’m wanting to bring into the room.
Olive Green + Block Print Floral
I really love this combination too, and it’s a good example of why colors don’t necessarily have to match to work together.
There’s no olive green in the lumbar pillow, but the tones relate. The deeper olive creates a beautiful backdrop for the dusty blue, soft rust and chocolate brown in the block print. Together they feel earthy and slightly unexpected, which keeps the combination from looking too coordinated.
Taupe Block Print + Faded Floral
For this combination, the two pillows work really well together for a couple of reasons. I kept the color palette tight and really leaned into the different shades of brown, but varied the scale of the patterns. The smaller block print mixed with the larger faded floral keeps the combination balanced without feeling too busy.
Dark Brown Block Print + Small Blue Block Print
Similar to the last combination, I varied the scale of the block prints to keep everything balanced. I also wanted to experiment with bringing in a little more blue and found this beautiful deep brown euro with a dusty blue and lavender pattern. The brighter blue in the lumbar pulls out those blue tones and gives the whole combination a little more contrast.
Blue Green Block Print + Blue Gingham
For this last one, I wanted to incorporate a gingham into the mix. I started with this beautiful block print with a muted olive green and blue pattern that immediately felt very English country to me. From there, I pulled in the blue gingham lumbar. The blue ties the two patterns together, while the ruffled edge adds another layer of that English country feel.
Trying One of My Favorite Combinations in Our Guest Bedroom
Of all the combinations I put together, the brown ticking stripe and creamy floral was the one I kept coming back to, so I decided to order both and see how they actually looked in the room.
I was a little unsure about the size of the ticking stripe pillows when I ordered them. They’re 18 inches square, and I worried they might feel too small on the bed. But once I got everything together, the proportions worked much better than I expected. The ruffled edges give the striped pillows a little more presence, and the 34-inch lumbar spans almost the full width of the two pillows behind it.

The creamy floral lumbar is also really soft to the touch. For these photos, I used an insert I already had around the house, so it isn’t quite as full as I’d like it to be. I did order my favorite insert in a 14-inch by 36-inch size, which should fit it a little better, but I’m considering going up to a 16-inch by 38-inch insert to give it an even fuller look. Even as it is, I really love the size and shape of it layered across the front of the bed.

The brown ticking stripe covers aren’t quite as soft. Since I see these as decorative pillows rather than something we’d actually use for sleeping, that doesn’t bother me much. Several of the reviews mentioned that the opening for the insert runs a little small, and I found that to be true. I was still able to use 20-inch inserts I already owned, but I had to fold them and work them through the opening carefully. It took a little patience, but it wasn’t a deal breaker for me, especially because I love the color and overall look of the pillows so much.
More importantly, I really like what this combination does for the room. The brown brings some warmth to the blue bed and works beautifully with the green millwork, while the smaller floral introduces another pattern without making everything feel too busy. It feels cozy for fall, but nothing about it is so seasonal that I couldn’t leave it here well beyond the next few months.

A Small Step Toward Finishing the Guest Bedroom
This was a small update, but it feels good to finally be making progress in this room again. Sometimes playing around with one little piece of a room is enough to get me excited about the bigger picture, and putting these pillow combinations together has definitely done that.
I still have some bigger decisions to make in here, including wallpaper, bedding and a rug, but I’m starting to have a much clearer idea of how I want the room to feel. For now, I’m happy to have added a little more warmth and pattern to the bed while I keep working through the rest.
And if you’re looking to make a small change at home for fall, pillows are such an easy place to start. A new color or pattern can shift the feeling of a room without requiring you to completely redecorate for the season.
