As we head into fall, I’m turning my attention back to our guest bedroom, starting with a few new fall bedroom pillows to bring in a little more color, pattern and warmth. I’ve spent a lot of time lately working on our family room, and while there are still a few things I’m sourcing for that space, I’m ready to make a little more progress in here.
One of my goals this year has been to bring more of the traditional, English-inspired cottage character I love to the front of our home. This summer, I finally started making some of those changes, drawing from some of my favorite cottage front porch ideas to identify the layers that could help move our porch toward the look I’ve had in mind.
I think it’s been in the back of my mind for a while now, but it wasn’t until we had family coming into town that I knew we needed to address it. Over the past year, as we’ve been slowly redesigning room after room, we’d gotten into the habit of bringing new pieces home before letting old ones go. Before we knew it, our home had become filled with furniture that was waiting for its next chapter. Looking back, I realized this is really what editing your home looks like. It’s not always about buying something new. Sometimes it’s about deciding what still belongs and what doesn’t.
One of the easiest ways to create a home that feels layered and full of character is by incorporating vintage artwork into your home. Over the years, I’ve found some incredible pieces at Habitat ReStore, antique malls, flea markets, and charity shops that I would happily buy all over again.
Last month I started a new monthly series called Worth the Hunt, where I share the vintage home decor, antiques, and thrifted finds that have had the biggest impact on our home. Some were investment purchases, while others cost less than dinner out, but every one of them has helped our home feel a little more collected.
After living in our home for a few years, we knew we needed more storage. One of the ways we decided to accomplish that was by adding semi-custom built-ins to our back family room.
These semi-custom built-ins have quickly become one of our favorite projects we’ve tackled. You can see how they fit into the finished room in our Family Room Makeover, where I share the design decisions that transformed the space. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but they’re incredibly functional. More importantly, they added the architectural character our back family room had been missing.
